About Our Chapter

NCL, Inc., Glendale Chapter is a group of mothers and daughters who have come together in a commitment to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences.
Members shall reside in the areas of Glendale, La Crescenta, La Canada, Pasadena, Burbank, and surrounding areas of Los Angeles. Like all NCL, Inc. Chapters, Glendale aims to foster the mother-daughter relationship by serving its communities together.

Chapter History

Our Chapter was organized in 1942 and became the first chartered Chapter in 1951, as part of the expansion of the Los Angeles Founder Chapter.  Our Chapter then became part of the reorganized and incorporated National Charity League, Inc., in 1958.  Currently, NCL, Inc., Glendale Chapter has over 200 Active, Provisional and Sustainer members who provide countless hours of service to our philanthropies.  Our signature events include our Senior Recognition Ball, Sellebration, the Senior Tea, From the Heart Blood Drive, the Mother/Daughter Fashion Show and Mother/Daughter Awards Ceremony.

NCL, Inc., Glendale Chapter is comprised of Patronesses (mothers) and Ticktockers (daughters) who work together to address the philanthropic needs of the communities we support.  Together they participate in cultural and educational activities based on an age-appropriate Six-Year Plan designed to develop philanthropy experience, leadership skills and cultural awareness.  Ticktockers are organized by grade level from 7th through 12th grade and are led by Patroness leaders (Grade Level Advisors) who coordinate meetings, activities and philanthropic participation around the organization’s Six-Year Plan.  Patronesses gather together monthly at Chapter-wide meetings devoted to the business of the Chapter.

From the beginning, NCL, Inc., Glendale Chapter was focused on providing for the needy.  In 1963, the Chapter, which had raised a significant of money toward a retirement home in the Glendale area decided to join forces with a local group of community volunteers called The International Sunshine Society to build additional facilities at Twelve Oaks.  The Twelve Oaks property had been bequeathed to The Sunshine Society by Effie Fifield, who wanted to provide low cost housing to the elderly.  From the 1960’s through 2013, our Chapter’s Patronesses and Ticktockers provided countless hours of service to Twelve Oaks, which became our main philanthropic outlet.  NCL, Inc., Glendale Chapter ran Twelve Oaks through the early 2000’s until an outside management company took over operations.  When NCL Inc., Glendale Chapter discovered that the management company was going to sell the property under dispute, the Chapter mounted a campaign to block the sale and in 2015, successfully returned Twelve Oaks to its non-profit stature. The Twelve Oaks Foundation re-opened the center to serve the elderly in our community,  as it was originally intended.  Our Chapter has now resumed its service to the elderly residents of Twelve Oaks.

Our Philanthropies

National Charity League, Inc., Glendale Chapter works with over 20 other local philanthropies, providing lunches and game nights for the homeless at Acsencia and Union Station, providing internships and assisting at summer camps at the YWCA of Glendale, providing fun social events for the elderly residents of Twelve Oaks Senior Living, decorating Rose Floats, assisting with Southern California Special Olympics on Game Days, providing dinners to Door of Hope, and organizing a blood drive with the Red Cross each summer.  Other service opportunities supported by our Chapter include volunteering at local hospitals, outdoor hands on learning/volunteering with the Arroyo Foothills Conservancy, working with Operation Gratitude and the La Canada Public Library.  Our Chapter’s signature activity is an annual rummage sale, Sellebration, typically held in September in the Glendale area for the local community and our philanthropy partners.

Annual Events

Sellebration:

Glendale Chapter’s Sellebration is a community wide rummage sale held each fall.  By providing clothing, accessories and household items for sale at affordable prices, Sellebration benefits not only clients from the Chapter’s philanthropies such as Ascencia and the YWCA, but also local residents.  Members donate gently used items and local businesses also provide new items for sale.  Patronesses and Ticktockers set up and staff the sale together, offering a unique Mother/Daughter experience for the entire Chapter.  For more information on this event, contact us at sellebrationglendale@gmail.com

From the Heart: Blood Drive

The Chapter hosts a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross in June, a time at which blood donations are dangerously low nationwide.  Our Chapter organizes the blood drive, recruits donors from among our members, friends, family and the wider community, and our Patronesses and Ticktockers work together that day to assist donors and to provide hospitality for the canteen. Ticktockers provide delicious baked goods at the post-donation canteen and mothers and daughters staff the event and donate blood.  From the Heart has become one of the most successful blood drives in Southern California. will take place on June 26, 2022.  To learn more, contact us at the following: fromtheheartncl@gmail.com.

Senior Mother Daughter Tea

The Senior Mother Daughter Tea is a much-cherished tradition.  The Sophomore class plans and hosts an exquisite, formal tea service for the mothers and daughters of the Senior class.  The Ticktockers are instructed in proper etiquette, table setting, and the elements of a formal tea menu.  As one of the final events during their Senior year, mothers and daughters reflect on their National Charity League journey.

Senior Presentation Ball

In keeping with National Charity League Inc.’s time honored tradition, the Glendale Chapter hosts a Senior Presentation Ball annually.  The Ball is the culmination of the NCL Inc., program for our Seniors, as each young woman is introduced to the gathering as her accomplishments and honors are listed.  Following an endearing and breathtaking waltz with her father, the Seniors and their families enjoy a magical evening that celebrates the NCL Inc. experience for each Ticktocker and her family.

Tea & Fashion Show

Each spring, our Chapter hosts a Mother/Daughter Tea, featuring a Fashion Show by the Junior class.  The Ticktockers receive professional training to walk the runway with confidence and style. Featuring casual to formal attire, the Fashion Show is a highlight of the Junior Class year.  In addition, we award annual grants to our philanthropy partners in a special presentation at the beginning of the program.
