National Charity League, San Diego del Norte members give thanks at Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers

On Oct. 24, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation designating the week of Thanksgiving as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Week. The next year, a bill was signed making November Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. This was in part due to a local San Diego physician and Alzheimer’s researcher named Dr. George G. Glenner whose advocacy for Alzheimer’s awareness also brought significant research funding to UCSD School of Medicine where he worked. Glenner is celebrated for his research and identification of the beta-amyloid protein, a protein that has been pivotal in much of today’s Alzheimer’s breakthroughs.
